The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA)established the Certified Marine Electronics Technicians(CMET)Program in the 1980s to provide a standard for marine electronics technicians. The goal is to give everyone in the marine electronics industry - consumers, dealers, distributors and manufacturers a standard to ensure quality installation and service of marine electronics equipment.

The certification process is continually upgraded and improved to reflect the latest advances in marine electronics technology.

Certified Marine Electronics Technician Test

Pre-requisite: A minimum of one year’s experience in the marine electronics field and approval from the CMET Committee. You must also hold an FCC General Radiotelephone Operators License (GROL) or higher lifetime license with Ship Radar Endorsement.

Passing Score: 70%

Course Materials: Study guide supplement

Cost: $125 member, $350 nonmember

Certification Period: 3 years - Basic & Advanced, 5 years - Senior

There are four(4) levels of certified marine electronics technicians:

CMET

  • Hold an FCC General Radiotelephone Operators License (GROL) or higher lifetime license with Ship Radar Endorsement.
  • Have 1 years employer verifiable experience working as a technician on marine electronics equipment.
  • Pass CMET exam with score of 70% or better.

ADVANCED CMET

  • Hold a current CMET certification.
  • Have 3 years employer verifiable experience working as a technician on marine electronics equipment.
  • Pass CMET Advanced exam with a score of 70% or better.

SENIOR CMET

  • Hold current Advanced CMET certification.
  • Have 10 years employer verifiable experience working on marine electronics equipment.
  • Be approved by a majority vote of the NMEA CMET Certification Committee.

How do I register to take the CMET exam?

Step:1 Complete the CMET application form.

Step:2 You must include your current and previous marine electronics experience.

Step:3 Return the completed CMET application form to the NMEA National Office.

Note: Allow 10 days for processing and to receive confirmation of application acceptance. The CMET exam must currently be taken through an approved proctor.

How do I renew my CMET certification?

Step:1 Complete the CMET renewal form.

Step:2 You must include your continuing education hours required during your renewal period. Basic & Advanced - 3 seminars, Senior - 5 seminars

Step:3 Return the completed renewal form prior to the certificate expiration date.

Note: Allow 10 days for processing and to receive your new certificate. If you do not renew your certificate within 60 days of expiration, you will be required to re-apply to the CMET program.
