What is the Marine Electronics Installer Program?The Marine Electronics Installer Program (MEI), established in 2004, is to encourage a high level of professional expertise in entry-level and mid-level technicians and to lead them to seek Certified Marine Electronic Technician (CMET) status. An MEI certificate is an indication of a working knowledge of NMEA’s Installation Standard, which clarifies and defines competent installation practices. A Marine Electronics Installer has demonstrated this proficiency by passing an examination designed to measure understanding of those principles. Basic Marine Electronics Installer CourseAn introductory course in marine electronics installation which clarifies and defines competent installation practices. Topics include ground systems, electrical systems, equipment installation and data communications. An MEI certificate is an indication of a working knowledge of NMEA’s Installation Standard. Basic Marine Electronics Installer Self Study CourseAn introductory course in marine electronics installation which clarifies and defines competent installation practices. Topics include ground systems, electrical systems, equipment installation and data communications. An MEI certificate is an indication of a working knowledge of NMEA’s Installation Standard. A Marine Electronics Installer has demonstrated this proficiency by passing an examination designed to measure understanding of those principles. This is a self-study course which a proctor is required to administer the exam. The exam must be completed within 60 days of receipt of the MEI course materials. Course Materials: NMEA Installation Standards includes supplemental workbook.
Advanced Marine Electronics Installer CourseAn advanced course designed for the Marine Electronics Installer who wishes to achieve competency in advanced topic areas and concepts. An Advanced MEI certificate is an indication that a mid-level technician has a working knowledge as to commissioning of a boat and troubleshooting marine electronic devices under supervision of a Certified Marine Electronics Technician. Topics include Computers and Networking, NMEA 2000® Installation and Troubleshooting, SSB Installation, Electromagnetic Interference, Testing and Commissioning, Antenna Arrangement and Installation, and Transducer and Radar Installation. Course Materials: NMEA Installations Standards with supplemental workbook.
How Do I Apply?You must submit application, fee and verification of experience to NMEA, Education Department,7 Riggs Avenue, Severna Park, MD 21146. By fax to: 410-975-9450. Where?For the Basic MEI course you can choose to enroll in a class nearest you or you may also choose to do self-study. If you choose to take the MEI self-study course, the exam may be taken through an assigned proctor who is within close proximity. You may find a proctor at the local library, community college or testing center. The exam must be taken within sixty days of receipt of materials or acknowledgement of approval from the committee. Note: The Advanced MEI course is not available through self-study. You must take the Advanced MEI course at a location nearest you. Download Course Registration Form Benefits
RenewalYou may renew your certificate by completing a renewal form with fee of $75.00 prior to your certification expiration date. MEI's that wish to renew need to provide documentation that they have attended at least three marine electronics manufacturer's technical training seminars within the two year period.
