NMEA 2000® Standard Main Document/ Primer VersionThe National Marine Electronics Association has announced the availability, for purchase, of a "primer" version of the recently released NMEA 2000® Standard. "Our intention is to provide this version to those who need to understand NMEA 2000® but don’t want to purchase the complete eight (8) volume set of documents, noted Steve Spitzer, chairman of the NMEA Standards Committee. " This "primer" version is actually the Main Document of the Standard which will provide an overview of NMEA 2000® explaining the concept of this networking standard: how it works, what it encompasses and what it provides after implementation," Spitzer continued. NMEA 2000® contains the requirements of a serial data communications network to inter-connect marine electronic equipment on vessels. It is multi-master and self -configuring and there is no central network controller. Equipment designed to this standard will have the ability to share data, including commands and status with other compatible equipment over a single channel.
