Publications and Standards

NMEA has become a developer, maintainer and distributor of various documents and standards related to the marine electronics industry. NMEA standards have been accepted as the common practice for how to share specific data information between competing entities or companies since the late 1970s.

The latest NMEA standards, which are new or newly revised in 2002, continue the legacy of keeping up with changing and emerging technology in marine electronic products. Furthermore, our latest standard the Installation Standard provides proven methodologies for safe consistent installation of all marine electronic products on moderate size vessels (25’ to 150’). Any comments, questions, and/or suggestions that you believe could aid in the further development of NMEA standards, and hence for the betterment of the marine electronics industry, are welcome.
