Navigating Toward a Safer Ocean: NMEA Leads the Charge in Whale Protection Technology
May 15, 2024
Last week, the NMEA played a pivotal role in The American Boating Congress (ABC) put on by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) in Washington, D.C., emphasizing the crucial need for a technology-based solution to reduce North Atlantic Right Whale strikes (NARW) on the Atlantic Seaboard. The imminent and blanket NOAA 10 knot speed ruling could devastate this industry that we all love, and significantly reduce boat sales. Representing the NMEA was President Mark Reedenauer, along with Brian Kane, Chairman of the NMEA Board WAVS Taskforce members from Atlantic Marine Electronics, Sea-AI, FarSounder, Garmin, and Navico presented ready to deploy technology based solutions that the industry is urging NOAA to evaluate and consider. This significant event brought together key stakeholders in the boating and marine accessory industry to discuss innovative approaches to protect marine life while promoting safe and efficient navigation.
In collaboration with the WAVS Task Force, NMEA showcased our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. The partnership aims to utilize existing technology while driving the development and implementing cutting-edge marine electronics systems that can detect and prevent whale strikes, ensuring the safety of our precious marine life while supporting the maritime community. The presence and active participation of NMEA leaders at The American Boating Congress underscore the association's dedication to leveraging technology for the betterment of safety and protection in the marine environment.
